7:10 Lesson (James 4)
Rock Solid
February 11, 2009 James Chapter 4
Is it the thought that counts?
Lesson Notes…
Main Point: Who we are comes from our motives which start with even our unsaid thoughts.
Is it the thought that counts? (yes, in a way it is because what we do starts with our thoughts.)
Introduction: (a few weeks ago we learned about guarding our tongue in what we say. (Exp Matthew. Holding his tongue) This week we will talk about motives which may be words thought but not even said.
Can they be evil??? YES

Body:
James 4:1What causes fights and quarrels among you? Don't they come from your desires that battle within you?
• Actions start with motives (pure or impure motives)

James 4:3 When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures.
• We don’t receive because we ask against God’s will

James 4:6 But he gives us more grace. That is why Scripture says:
"God opposes the proud
but gives grace to the humble."
10 Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.
15 Instead, you ought to say, "If it is the Lord's will, we will live and do this or that."
• Ask yourself; “Where is my Heart
• Ask God for humility

James 4:7 Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
• Be consistent to resist evil (Satan will not have authority in your life)

James 4:11 Brothers, do not slander one another. Anyone who speaks against his brother or judges him speaks against the law and judges it
• Gossip tears down.
• Encouragement Builds up

Conclusion: Who we are starts with our motives. We must choose to have pure motives to glorify God.
